Professional
Development
Kahili Adventist
School is accredited by the National Council for Private Education, the
North American Division Seventh-day Adventist Department of Education,
and is a member of the Hawaiian Association of Independent Schools. All
teachers are degreed and certified, and are required to continue their
professional development on a yearly basis.
During the first two weeks of school, teachers review and evaluate their
current students. This time is also used to prepare students for the rigors
of their strong academic load for the school year. At the end of those
two weeks, the faculty and staff attend a two day retreat, where together
they reevaluate their current class strengths and weaknesses, and update
their year long plan to fit the needs of their present students. In addition
they spend time with other professional educators to encourage the development
of teacher-to-teacher networking and collegial support.
Throughout the year, teachers meet one afternoon a week for the sole purpose
of improving instruction, sharing teaching strategies, and collaborating
on ways to best help students, especially those who are either struggling
or needing additional challenges.
ITBS (IOWA Test of Basic Skills) are administered during the first quarter
of the school year. Testing outcomes are used by teachers to identify
areas of strength and weakness, and the curriculum is modified accordingly.
In addition, curriculum-based assessments are used on a regular basis
to help identify students who need to be offered either re-teaching or
enrichment activities. These students are tracked for consideration of
learning enrichment, tutoring, or after-school homework assistance.
