Language Arts
	The fundamentals for reading comprehension are built into Kahili's kindergarten. Our reading program encourages children’s curiosity about text and engages the child in the importance and excitement of reading. Students learn how to gather information from text, as well as enjoy the stories that unfold.
	Our Kindergarten readiness program helps young readers to use word recognition skills and strategies to help them read and comprehend text. We use both phonics and whole language to give the students the confidence to begin reading simple sentences before they graduate to first grade. Each week the students experience interactive activities, learning games, printable worksheets, reinforcement exercises, assessments, and positive reinforcement. They are engaged in vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literature, writing strategies, writing applications, English language conventions, listening and speaking. This reading and writing program is taught in small groups with no more than 5 students working with each teacher.
